Drywall Sheet Calculator
Enter the wall and ceiling area you are boarding, pick a sheet size and the number of layers, and set a waste allowance. You get the board area including waste and the number of whole sheets to order. It counts sheets only, so fasteners, tape and compound are priced separately.

Planning estimate- Surface area
- 840.00 sq ft
- Board area with layers and waste
- 924.00 sq ft
- Area per sheet
- 32.00 sq ft
- Sheets needed
- 29
Walls plus ceiling, one layer, before waste.
1 layer and 10% waste.
Rounded up to whole sheets.
How it is calculated
- 1 Surface area = wall area + ceiling area.
- 2 Board area with waste = surface area x layers x (1 + waste % / 100).
- 3 Area per sheet = 4 ft x sheet length. A 4 x 8 ft sheet is 32 sq ft, a 4 x 10 ft sheet is 40 sq ft and a 4 x 12 ft sheet is 48 sq ft.
- 4 Sheets needed = board area with waste / area per sheet, rounded up to a whole sheet.
Assumptions to confirm
- Waste allowance
- 10% is a typical allowance for cuts, breakage and awkward layouts. It is a starting point, so raise it for many small rooms or lots of openings and confirm it against how your crew hangs board.
- Openings
- Wall area is used as you enter it. Doors and windows are not subtracted automatically, so enter net wall area if you want them out. Small openings are often left in as extra waste.
- Layers
- Two layers simply doubles the board area. The calculator does not know your fire or sound assembly, so follow the assembly listing for board type, thickness and layer count.
- Sheet width
- All sheets are treated as 4 ft wide. Other widths and lengths exist, so change the sheet size to match what you will order.
- What is not included
- Screws, tape, joint compound, corner bead and labor are not calculated here. Confirm quantities for those with your supplier or the manufacturer.
This is an early planning estimate, not a quotation. Check quantities against your drawings, your specification and the manufacturer's data.
Questions about this calculator
How many sheets of drywall do I need?
Divide the area you are boarding, plus waste, by the area of one sheet and round up. A 4 x 8 ft sheet covers 32 sq ft, so 840 sq ft with 10% waste is 924 sq ft, or 29 sheets.
Should I subtract doors and windows?
You can, by entering net wall area. Many estimators leave small openings in because offcuts around them are rarely reusable. Use whichever matches your bid practice.
Are longer sheets better?
Longer sheets mean fewer seams on long walls and ceilings but are heavier and harder to carry. Pick the size your crew and the building access can handle.
Does this cover moisture-resistant or fire-rated board?
The area maths is the same for any board type. Board type and rating come from your spec, so confirm them separately and order each type by its own area.
Take these numbers off the drawings
Estimateria reads the door, hardware and finish schedules out of your PDFs into a priced grid, so the quantities you check here start from the set instead of a retype.
