Takeoff workbenches
Estimateria vs PlanSwift for door, hardware and finish takeoffs
PlanSwift has been the point-and-click takeoff tool for individual estimators for years, and its drag-and-drop assemblies — material, labor and waste dropped onto a measurement — are still one of the neatest ideas in the category. It is also a Windows desktop application tied to a workstation, with no real-time collaboration, and its public reviews are consistent about lag on large plan sets. Estimateria now has its own version of the assembly idea (material with waste, labor at a rate, dropped onto a condition) and reads the door, hardware and finish schedules off the sheets, prices the hardware, and runs in a browser, with an early Mac and Windows desktop app. It covers fewer trades and has no CAD or image files.
What PlanSwift is
A desktop takeoff and estimating tool from ConstructConnect covering 18 or more trade workflows. You point and click to measure on PDF, CAD and image files, and drag assemblies carrying material, labor and waste onto what you measured, so the estimate builds as you go. Its Takeoff BOOST AI adds Auto Takeoff for areas, lengths, counts and wall types, Auto Count for matching symbols, Auto Scale from title blocks and Auto Bookmark; Auto Takeoff is only on the higher plan.
What Estimateria is
A browser workspace built around the schedules rather than the measurement. The set is classified on upload, the door, hardware and finish tables are pulled off the pages into an editable grid keyed by door mark, hardware sets break into items priced from suppliers, and every row keeps the page and region it came from. Millwork is measured on a calibrated plan where there is no schedule to read, with conditions and assemblies that price it into a running bid and recap.
How the same job goes
One door schedule on a set of architectural PDFs, from the drawings to a priced, exportable list.
In PlanSwift
- 1Install on the workstation and open the plan set locally.
- 2Set the scale — Auto Scale reads it from title blocks across the sheets.
- 3Point and click to measure the conditions, or run Auto Takeoff and Auto Count on the higher plan.
- 4Drag assemblies onto the measurements so material, labor and waste come with them.
- 5Watch the estimate build as you measure, then export to Excel.
- 6For the door schedule itself, read the table on the sheet and enter the openings.
In Estimateria
- 1Open a browser on whatever machine you are at. Nothing to install.
- 2Upload the set; every page is classified locally and the schedules are located.
- 3Select the schedule on the page; the rows land in the grid, one per door mark.
- 4Review the flagged rows with the drawing a click away on the source chip.
- 5Measure the millwork on a calibrated plan and give each measurement a condition with an assembly.
- 6Hardware sets break into items, matched and priced from supplier listings.
- 7Export the estimating package to Excel, or the marked-up sheets to PDF.

Stay with PlanSwift when
- Assemblies decide it: you want material, labor and waste attached to what you measure.
- Your takeoff is measured on the plan across many trades, not read from schedule tables.
- You need CAD and image files as well as PDFs, or assemblies across many trades already built.
- You are happy on a Windows workstation and do not need more than one person in the file.
- Auto Scale across a whole set is worth the licence on its own.
Choose Estimateria when
- Division 8 is the bid: doors, frames, hardware sets, and the finish schedule beside them.
- You want the schedule read off the sheet, not measured or retyped.
- You move between machines, or your team is not all on Windows.
- You want two estimators on one bid, seeing each other's work.
- You want a running bid, supplier quotes and a recap next to the takeoff, not an export away.
- You want to answer 'which page did this row come from' without hunting.
Side by side
| Feature | Estimateria | PlanSwift |
|---|---|---|
| Runs in a browser on any machine | Yes Browser-native, nothing to install. An early desktop app for Mac and Windows renders pages locally, but is not an offline tool. |
No Desktop installation tied to specific workstations, per its public reviews. |
| Assemblies with material, labor and waste | Partly Assemblies of materials (with a waste percentage) and labor (at a rate) attach to a condition, so the estimate builds as you measure. Fewer prebuilt trades; you build the library, and hardware pricing is supplier listings. |
Yes Drag-and-drop assemblies that carry waste; the estimate builds as you measure. |
| Schedule table extracted to rows by door mark | Yes Door, hardware and finish modules read the table off the page. |
No Built around measuring on the plan, not reading schedule tables. |
| Hardware set breakdown and pricing | Yes Sets split into items, linked, priced from suppliers and selected in the grid. |
Partly Assemblies and parts you build and maintain; not a hardware set workflow. |
| Scale set automatically across a set | Partly The scale is read from the title block text on a sheet where it is legible; otherwise calibrate by two points. Viewport regions carry their own scale. |
Yes Auto Scale reads title blocks and sets the scale on all sheets. |
| Symbol counting | Partly Doors, rooms and count-by-exemplar as reviewable suggestions. Accuracy measured on synthetic drawings only. |
Yes Auto Count matches symbols across the set; Auto Takeoff on the higher plan. |
| Two people on the same bid at once | Partly Presence avatars, live pointers on the drawing (markup editor and the PDF pane of the takeoff tabs), selections in the editor, follow mode (click a colleague to go to their page, scroll and zoom), pinned comments with mentions and assignment, an in-app inbox and an activity feed. Pointers and pages are pushed over a websocket; the rest refreshes by polling. |
No No real-time collaboration, a consistent theme in its public reviews. |
| Performance on very large sets | Partly A virtualised, tiled viewer built for large sets. Not benchmarked against a competitor. |
Partly Reviewers report lag and freezing on large plan sets and slow uploads of large PDFs. |
| Where a quantity came from | Yes Every row and accepted detection carries its page, region and producer. |
Partly Quantities tie to the measurement that made them. |
| Volume, CAD and image files | Partly PDF only. Area, length, perimeter, count and volume (an area times a depth you enter). |
Yes PDF, CAD and image files, with volume takeoff. |

What Estimateria does not do
If one of these decides the job for you, PlanSwift is the better answer and we would rather you knew now.
- No prebuilt library of trade assemblies: you build the ones you need, which is slower to start than a mature library.
- No CAD or image files: PDFs only.
- Scale is read from the title block per sheet where it is legible, and calibrated by hand where it is not. There is no one-click Auto Scale across a whole set.
- No visual revision overlay; reissued sheets are compared by number and text only.
- Nothing runs offline. The desktop app is early and still depends on the deployed site.
What it costs
- PlanSwift
- Published per seat per year: Essential $2,000 (takeoff and estimating, AI counting, scaling and bookmarking) and Core $3,000 (adds the full Takeoff BOOST suite including Auto Takeoff), with a 14-day trial and volume pricing at ten or more seats. Older perpetual licences were converted to subscriptions.
- Estimateria
- Sign-up is open and free while the product is being built, so there is no published price yet. The free calculators need no account at all.
Prices are what the vendor published when this page was reviewed, and they move. Check with PlanSwift before you budget.
Common questions
Is this a replacement for PlanSwift?
Only if your takeoff is the schedules. If you measure conditions across many trades and lean on assemblies, PlanSwift does something Estimateria does not do at all, and the table above says so.
Do I lose assemblies by moving?
Partly. Estimateria has assemblies with material, waste and labor attached to a measurement, but you build the library and it is younger than PlanSwift's. It prices door hardware from supplier listings, and it does not cover CAD or image takeoff.
What do I gain on a Division 8 bid?
The schedule is read rather than retyped, hardware sets break into priced items in the same grid, and every row keeps its page, so a reviewer checking an opening lands on the drawing instead of searching for it.
Does it handle a 300-sheet set?
The viewer is virtualised and tiled for exactly that, and the page text is indexed in the background so search covers the whole set. We have not benchmarked it against PlanSwift, so treat that as unmeasured rather than won.
