Hinges are often priced by the pair; a half means one odd hinge.
How it is calculated
- 1 Hinge quantity is driven by door height. Doors up to 60 in take 2 hinges, over 60 up to 90 in take 3, and over 90 up to 120 in take 4.
- 2 Above 120 in, one more hinge is added for every further 30 in (or part of it).
- 3 Pairs of doors have two leaves, and each leaf is hinged on its own, so the per-opening count is doubled.
- 4 The optional extra hinge adds one per leaf for heavy, wide or high-traffic doors, which many specs call for.
Assumptions to confirm
- Height rule
- The 2 / 3 / 4 hinge steps at 60, 90 and 120 in are the widely used guideline. Some manufacturers publish their own; use theirs when the spec names one.
- Width and weight
- Width and door weight mostly change the hinge size and weight class, not the count. The extra-hinge option is a blunt way to cover the heavy-door case.
- Continuous hinges
- A continuous (piano) hinge is one item per leaf, not a count of knuckle hinges. Price it separately.

How many hinges does a pair of doors need?
Each leaf is hinged separately, so a pair of 84 in doors needs 6 hinges, or 3 pairs of hinges.
Do fire-rated doors need more hinges?
Rated doors are usually heavier, and rated assemblies often specify hinge weight and count. Check the spec and the door manufacturer's listing rather than relying on the guideline.
