Baseboard Trim Calculator

Enter the room length and width, the number of doors and their width, and any other openings where trim stops. You get the perimeter, the net length after openings, the length with waste and whole sticks to buy. Corners are covered by the waste allowance rather than counted one by one.

Inputs

Example values filled in
ft
ft
in

Inches, not feet. Assumption: the opening is about the door width.

ft

Feet, not inches. Closets, cased openings, built-ins and anywhere else the trim stops.

%

Assumption: 10% covers offcuts and mitered corners on a simple room.

Result

Planning estimate
Room perimeter
54.00 ft

2 times (length + width).

Openings to subtract
6.00 ft

Door openings plus other openings.

Net linear feet
48.00 ft

Perimeter less openings, never below zero.

Linear feet with waste
52.80 ft

10% waste added.

Sticks needed
7

8 ft sticks, rounded up.

How it is calculated

  1. 1 Room perimeter = 2 x (length + width).
  2. 2 Openings to subtract = (number of doors x door width in inches / 12) + other openings in feet.
  3. 3 Net linear feet = perimeter - openings, never below zero.
  4. 4 Linear feet with waste = net linear feet x (1 + waste % / 100).
  5. 5 Sticks needed = linear feet with waste / stick length, rounded up to a whole stick.

Assumptions to confirm

Waste allowance
10% is a typical allowance for offcuts, cutting mistakes and mitered corners in a simple room. It is a starting point, so confirm it against how your crew cuts and joins trim.
Corners
Inside and outside corners need miter or coped cuts that use extra length. They are not counted separately, so add more waste for rooms with many corners or bay walls.
Door openings
Each door opening is taken as the door width you enter, with no allowance for the frame. Enter door width in inches. Trim usually stops at the frame, so check your actual openings.
Other openings
Closets, cased openings, built-ins and fireplaces are not detected. Add their widths in feet, not inches.
Stick lengths
Trim is treated as 8, 12 or 16 ft sticks with the total length divided evenly. In practice, runs are cut from whole sticks, so a run that just misses a stick length can waste more. The waste allowance is meant to cover that.

This is an early planning estimate, not a quotation. Check quantities against your drawings, your specification and the manufacturer's data.

Questions about this calculator

How do I calculate baseboard for a room?

Add the room length and width, double it for the perimeter, subtract door and other openings, add waste and divide by the stick length. Round up to a whole stick.

Do I subtract door openings from baseboard?

Usually yes, because baseboard does not run across a door opening. This calculator subtracts the door width you enter for each door.

How much extra baseboard should I buy?

Ten percent is a common allowance for offcuts and corner cuts, but rooms with many corners need more. Confirm with your installer.

Is baseboard sold in different lengths?

Baseboard is commonly sold in sticks of 8, 12 and 16 ft, though availability varies by product and supplier. Longer sticks mean fewer joints on long walls.
