Flooring Quantity Calculator

Enter the room length and width, choose a waste allowance and the coverage per box. You get the area, the area with waste, whole boxes to buy, the coverage that gives you and what is left over. Add a price per square foot to see the material cost.

Inputs

Example values filled in
ft
ft

Straight lays usually sit at the low end. Diagonal, herringbone and other pattern layouts need more.

sq ft

Assumption: check the coverage printed on the product you are buying.

$/sq ft

Leave at 0 to skip the cost.

Result

Planning estimate
Room area
180.00 sq ft

Length times width.

Area with waste
198.00 sq ft

10% waste added.

Boxes needed
10

Rounded up to whole boxes.

Coverage bought
200.00 sq ft

Boxes times coverage per box.

Leftover
2.00 sq ft

Coverage bought less area with waste: the extra from rounding up to whole boxes.

How it is calculated

  1. 1 Room area = length x width.
  2. 2 Area with waste = room area x (1 + waste % / 100).
  3. 3 Boxes needed = area with waste / coverage per box, rounded up to a whole box.
  4. 4 Coverage bought = boxes x coverage per box. Leftover = coverage bought - area with waste, which is the extra from rounding up to whole boxes.
  5. 5 Material cost = coverage bought x price per sq ft. It is skipped when the price is 0.

Assumptions to confirm

Waste allowance
5%, 10% and 15% are common choices. Straight lays usually sit at the low end, while diagonal, herringbone and other pattern layouts need more because of extra cuts. These are typical values, so confirm with the manufacturer or installer.
Coverage per box
20 sq ft per box is only an example. Coverage varies by product and is printed on the box or in the product data, so use the real figure.
Room shape
The room is treated as one rectangle. For L-shaped rooms, closets or alcoves, split the space into rectangles, run each one and add the results, or use the room areas calculator.
Cost
Cost is boxes bought times coverage times your price per sq ft, because you pay for whole boxes. Tax, underlayment, transitions, delivery and labor are not included.

This is an early planning estimate, not a quotation. Check quantities against your drawings, your specification and the manufacturer's data.

Questions about this calculator

How much flooring should I order?

Take the room area, add a waste allowance, and divide by the coverage of one box, rounding up. A 15 x 12 ft room is 180 sq ft, or 198 sq ft with 10% waste, which is 10 boxes at 20 sq ft each.

How much waste should I allow for flooring?

Straight layouts commonly use a lower allowance and diagonal or pattern layouts use more. Confirm the figure with the manufacturer's installation guide or your installer.

What if the room is not a rectangle?

Break it into rectangles and add their areas. Then enter a length and width whose product matches that total to get the box count.

Should I buy extra for future repairs?

Many people keep a few spare boxes because dye lots and discontinued lines can make later matches difficult. The leftover figure shows what you will have from the round-up.
